The Beast from the East seems a long time ago now. The current dry spell kicked in at the start of June and the Met Office isn’t forecasting any rain just yet. In fact, this year is being compared to the summer of ‘76.

While many of us can remember that summer, do you recall that it ended in September with torrential rain storms?

If you have any responsibilities for public or private roads, drives, drains or culverts, now is the time to make sure you’re ready for a downpour.

Why does flooding happen?

After a period of very dry weather, the ground becomes hard. If you’ve been watering your garden, you may notice that the water just runs off instead of soaking into the earth.

The same thing can happen during a storm but on a much larger scale. Water can’t soak into the baked ground and runs straight off. That’s when you need your drains and culverts operating at full capacity to prevent a road from becoming flooded.

Keep your drains clear

Drains and culverts need regular maintenance because they become blocked over time by different obstructions:

  • Silting happens every time it rains, when soil gets washed into the drain.
  • Tree root pressure causes drain or culvert walls to collapse.
  • Tree branches from a previous storm or, unfortunately, fly-tipped rubbish can block culverts and drains, causing other objects to dam up during the next storm.

Don’t wait for the bad weather: Clear your drains and sewers now

Our engineers at Drain and Sewer Services provide a full range of drain and sewer services to local authorities, business and home owners. We are fully trained in all drain unblocking techniques to sort out your problem, using towed and lorry-mounted jetting units to get to any job, even on remote, off-road sites.

We also inspect and maintain drains and culverts, using CCTV vehicles to get into inaccessible drains.
